According to news from Thailand on August 17th, during the intervals when the rain stopped, rubber farmers in Trang Province hastened their rubber tapping activities. Their aim was to quickly sell the latex they collected, so as to earn an income to support their families and set aside money to send their children to school. In the past, frequent rainfall had prevented the rubber farmers from being able to tap rubber, leaving them in a difficult situation. However, the more pressing issue at present is the drastic plunge in the price of rubber, which has reached an alarmingly low level.
As recently as May this year, the price of rubber had soared to 65 baht per kilogram, bringing joy to the farmers. But subsequently, the price kept declining steadily. By the end of June, it had dropped to only around 48-50 baht per kilogram.
Some rubber farmers have voiced their grievances. They pointed out that the cost of gas is high and prices in general have increased, while the price of rubber has been continuously falling. This has eroded their confidence. They find themselves in a situation where they lack the financial means to send their children to universities in Bangkok and are also unable to afford to cover their children’s living expenses.
In my opinion, the reduction in the price of natural rubber (NR) raw materials has several implications:
Firstly, with an oversupply in the market, there is likely to be a price cut for rubber products in the near future. This presents an opportunity for businessmen to stockpile goods. However, there is another complication. If the price continues to decline, it becomes a question of when the optimal time for stockpiling will be. Most crucially, due to insufficient demand from end-users, businessmen are hesitant to build up large inventories.
The situation is particularly difficult for the rubber farmers in Thailand. If they are unable to earn sufficient income from rubber cultivation and have no alternative sources of income, it raises the question of what measures should be taken to support these farmers.
It should be noted that when discussing economic issues, it is important to consider multiple factors and viewpoints comprehensively. And the analysis here is based on the content of the given text for reference purposes.
